Vintage FRENCH Gold Filled Medal or Charm - Saint Therese * Saint Thérèse of Lisieux
Welcome to ROBINS NEST MIDWEST!
Religious items are in a tricky place when it comes to listing. Most of the items I offer are jewelry so per Ruby Lane rules, they are supposed to be listed in jewelry. But I know that a lot of buyers look in the COLLECTIBLES RELIGIOUS category to find jewelry as well. So I am going to set down this rule for my listings and hope that once my customers get used to it, they will know where to look.
If an item is silver tone metal or silverplate/silver plate or gold filled- the item will be listed in COLLECTIBLES RELIGIOUS.
If an item is sterling silver or 14K Gold - the item will be listed in JEWELRY.
So may I now offer from my collection of religious treasures.....
AGE: C.1940 or so
ITEM: From France, a small round, yellow gold filled medal, charm or pendant depicting Saint Therese aka Saint Thérèse of Lisieux to the front and the Cathedral at Lisieux to the back. Original jump ring is still attached.
CONDITION: Very nice with the usual look of age - slight wear to the nose (more noticeable in the pics than with the naked eye). Most likely presented on a young girls First Communion.
HALLMARKS: On the bale, one partial mark that I cannot make out as well as the word ULTRA.
METAL CONTENT: French Gold Filled items were of a metal combination that had the look/appearance of 18K gold with a rose gold underlay. If the yellow gold became worn, the rose gold underlay would appear giving the piece the most unusual color combination. However, the yellow gold layer was usually so thick that this usually never happened. Gold Filled items were made in France under a variety of names - FIX, ORIA, MURAT were some of the most famous - to be honest, I have never heard of ULTRA before finding this medal.
SIZE: 1/2" high/wide
FINAL COMMENTS: Ready to use once more!
SAINT THERESE: Saint Thérèse of Lisieux born Marie Françoise-Thérèse Martin (2 January 1873 – 30 September 1897), also known as Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face was a French Catholic Discalced Carmelite nun who is widely venerated in modern times. She is popularly known as "The Little Flower of Jesus" or simply "The Little Flower". Together with Saint Francis of Assisi, she is one of the most popular saints in the history of the Catholic Church.
Thérèse felt an early call to religious life, and overcoming various obstacles, in 1888 at the early age of 15, she became a nun and joined two of her elder sisters in the cloistered Carmelite community of Lisieux, Normandy. After nine years as a Carmelite religious, having fulfilled various offices such as sacristan and assistant to the novice mistress, and having spent her last eighteen months in Carmel in a night of faith, she died at aged 24, following a slow and painful fight against tuberculosis.
