C.1900 FRENCH Bronze Dore "Bread of Life" First Communion Souvenir
Welcome to ROBINS NEST MIDWEST! May I offer….
AGE: Anywhere from C.1900 to C.1930 - but I am erring on the earlier date.
ITEM: From France, here's a bronze dore icon (Panis Vitae - Bread of Life) that would have been presented to a young boy (or girl) upon his/her First Communion. Side pins along with a velvet backing help to keep the center medal of Jesus and a young child (could be a boy, could be a girl) in place; the bow top has a jump ring at the back for hanging on a wall.
CONDITION: Vintage patina - a lot of the original fire gilding has disappeared over time - especially the center medal which shows a coppery color base. Small indent at the bottom on the rim that keeps everything in place - looks like the piece may have been dropped on a hard surface at some time.
METAL CONTENT: Bronze along with perhaps copper
HALLMARKS: The front panel shows the initials L de H - possibly the sculoptors mark. No other marks I can spot.
SIZE: From top of bow to bottom measures 4-7/8"; width is 2-5/8".
FINAL COMMENTS: Would look terrific on a wall with other religious items!
