Exquisite ANTIQUE VICTORIAN 14K Gold Crusader Cross - Etruscan Design
Welcome to ROBINS NEST MIDWEST! May I offer for your consideration....
AGE: C.1870 or so
ITEM: It doesn't get much better than this! Here's a rare find indeed - a yellow gold CRUSADER CROSS from the Victorian era that features wirework and applied dots done Etruscan fashion along with 3D pyramids at the center of the piece. Add the original bale and you have one fabulous religious piece that is going to look impressive on a book chain, a ribbon or a simple thick gold chain. The cross is hollow but has a mighty weight to the structure.
Why is it called a Crusader Cross you might ask? Well, the design of this piece is based on a design worn by soldiers in the Crusades of the 11th-13th century. The Crusades were a series of religious wars fought by the Christian nations of Europe to recover the Holy Lands from the Moslems; the battle of King Richard the Lionheart and Saladdin being the most famous.
CONDITION: Excellent with 100 years PLUS of patina. I have not polished.
METAL CONTENT: 14K Gold
HALLMARKS: None, as is the norm with American Victorian pieces. Metal was lightly acid tested by 3 different jewelers to make sure of the gold content.
SIZE: From top of bale to bottom measures 3-1/4"; width is 1-13/16".
WEIGHT: 28.5 grams
FINAL COMMENTS: Shown with a gold filled book chain that is for display purposes only (it's sold actually) - it gives the idea of how the piece should be hung on a "weighty" chain.
