C.1900 Handcarved & Painted Santos Figure - A Saint without Hands
AGE: C.1900 or so
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: Italy, South America or possibly the Philippines (Spanish Colonial period)
ITEM: A hand carved and hand painted Santos/Saint, which one I know not. Having passed through the years, the gentle person has lost his hands but not his head. Dressed in what appears to be a simple monk's habit, the Saint could be Saint Frances of Assisi as it would explain hands bent at the elbow in an outstretched position. It might also explain why they have disappeared - they were easily removed.
CONDITION: Old age has caused the Saint to suffer the indignities of losing a touch of paint here and there, some bits of wood and, it seems, limbs! There is a large section of the pedestal base missing but the Saint does stand on its own. While he can hold no religious object, rosaries can be draped around the neck.
SIZE: The Santos stands 12-3/4" high and is 4-1/2" wide.
FINAL COMMENTS: The good ones are hard to find and this one has been in my personal collection for about 15 years now. Until a new home is found, I am content to live with this religious personage.
