Adorable STERLING SILVER Pendant of a Frog/Toad by Kurt Morrison
Welcome to ROBINS NEST MIDWEST! May I offer for your consideration....
ITEM: A silver pendant in the shape of a Frog or Toad. The design is an original wax casting by Kurt Morrison, Vancouver Island, British Columbia.
CONDITION: Excellent with a mellow patina to the silver.
METAL CONTENT: Sterling Silver
HALLMARKS: None - metal was acid tested for content. To add to the story here's my recollection.
"During the late 1970s, Kurt and I were both approached by the B.C. Government because we did not have a STERLING or GOLD stamp with which to mark our jewelry; it seems we were breaking a law by not identifying the metal content of our product. Both of us didn't have the $125 needed for each stamp and while collectively, we could afford one, we couldn't afford the other. And if we chose NOT to go without a metal stamp, we would be forced to stop selling our jewelry! Since I knew that I would be moving to Los Angeles, I helped Kurt purchase the STERLING stamp. It was during this time period, when Kurt and I had no stamp and were ignorant of Canadian hallmarking rules, that this piece was produced."
SIZE: 7/8" x 7/8" with a depth of 3/8".
WEIGHT: 5.8 grams
FINAL COMMENTS: I have personally known Kurt Morrison since 1977. I've been privy to the incredible development of Kurt's work from his early beginning in lost wax casting to his present day "One of a Kind" pieces that are commissioned by corporations and celebrities alike (one of his very earliest pieces was given as a gift to Barry Manilow in 1978). Here's my story.....
"Kurt and I both lived in Vancouver, B.C. in the late 1970s. I met him in Gastown and again while he was exhibiting at a Circle Craft Co-Operative craft fair in the city. To say that I was awe inspired by the gent is to say the least. His work was incredible and made my poor attempts at silversmithing look like the amateurish projects I considered them to be.
Kurt's early days in Vancouver were spent learning his trade, trying every possible form of jewelry-making that was available, even so far as to take over my enamel kiln and my enamels as it was an experience he just HAD to try! Kurt lived on a shoestring budget during those days, living in the basement of a house that had the worst lighting and surviving on peanut butter sandwiches (how I came to hate the smell of peanut butter during those days)! Seriously, those sandwiches were the only thing Kurt could afford on his small budget, every penny he got he spent on silver and gold! While his presence at multiple craft fairs elicited a small income, it was never enough to buy all the jewelry-related items Kurt wanted. Kurt loved to experiment, the gentleman has never been completely satisfied with any of his work. He truly believes that with each and every item he creates he can "do better."
During the 80s, Kurt was forced to leave Vancouver due to rising housing prices. While I moved to Los Angeles, Kurt decided to move to one of the B.C. Islands settling on Hornby. Hornby was his home for many a year until, just recently, he made the move to Vancouver Island. Situated near Campbell River, Kurt is once again catering to the jewelry needs of the local areas.
Kurt has formed silver to many different applications - not only jewelry but also knife handles, small sculptures and more. I must say with every new design I saw, I could see the development in in handiwork. It just got better and better! The only thing Kurt lacks in becoming a world renowned artisan (besides a regular income), is exposure. And with this listing (and a few others) Art and I hope to remedy this.
Since those very early years, I have collected Kurt's work. The pieces I am offering at this time were from my personal collection.
If anyone desires further information about Kurt, please contact me and I can pass you on."
