VICTORIAN REVIVAL Silver Gilt & Garnet Fleur de Lis Flowered Watch Pin
Welcome to ROBINS NEST MIDWEST! May I offer….
AGE: I'm guessing but maybe 1950/1960 or so
ITEM: A silver gilt watch pin in a Fleur de Lis flowered design - the symbol of Florence, Italy and NOT of France (see below). In a Victorian Revival (Etruscan) design, the pin is embellished with 2 faceted garnets that are bezel set. Nice long pin at the back to hold a watch; simple c-catch to hold the pinstem in place.
CONDITION: Very nice with a heavy gold overlay to the front, and a light gold overlay to the back. The appearance of the piece is of "vintage old". Garnets have slight imperfections - a small scratch on one and a pock mark on the other - only visible with a 10X loupe. There is evidence of an old repair - the watch pin seems to have been resoldered to the pin at some time. Cleanly done but there is "black" to denote the soldering process.
METAL CONTENT: Well the Fleur de Lis appears to be silver gilt however the pinstem tests at 10K Gold.
HALLMARKS: This is about as much as I can make out on the underside of the pin - O WAT WISS LD PLA ) MICH (or MICR) with TC in a box on its own.
I'm going out on a limb with this one but I think the partial "wiss" means SWISS and if so, the silver content is 800 or 900 Silver and, of course, of European manufacture. Metal does acid test for silver content.
SIZE: The fleur de lis alone measures 11/16" wide x 1-1/8" high. The pin is 1-1/8" wide.
WEIGHT: 4.1 grams
FINAL COMMENTS: In Italy, the fleur de lis, called fiordaliso or giglio is mainly known as the crest of the city of Florence. In the Florentine fleurs-de-lis, the stamens are always posed between the petals.
