James Cleland STERLING SILVER, 18K Gold & Tanzanite 2-Part Sword with Sheath Pendant!
AGE: In business since 1988 so hard to pinpoint an exact date.
ARTISAN: James Cleland - Jeweler Extraordinaire and former resident of St. Louis, MO. Mr. Cleland is both a scientist and artisan who specializes in One of a Kind designs - both naturalistic and Medieval/Victorian. He has won numerous awards for his One of a Kind designs and has had his work exhibited at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art and the Wilding Art Museum in Los Olivos. One of his most recent competition wins was placing First in a juried international art competition sponsored by Art Buzz, a non-profit collective that links professional artists to art dealers, collectors, and art lovers worldwide.
ITEM: A magnificent pendant that is simply a breathtaking piece of workmanship! It's a pendant - it's Objet D'art - it's magnificent! Formed of two pieces, I have a sword and its accompanying sheath. The sheath is silver with gold applied add-ons near the top. Both sides of the sheath are HAND ENGRAVED!! The sword has an 18K gold hilt with a faceted Tanzanite (looks more like a pale blue sapphire so might be this) set at the top. The blade is silver and again, is HAND ENGRAVED on both sides! The piece can be worn one of two ways (pictured) and yes, the sword extracts easily from the sheath but not so much so that when you try to shake it out of its covering, it falls.
CONDITION: Perfect! The piece was stored for many, many years and there is a touch of tarnish to the sheath - the blade of the word is a little cleaner. A light polish will bring up a high shine to both pieces.
METAL CONTENT: Sterling Silver and 18K Gold
TANZANITE: Faceted round measures 4mm (25 points)
HALLMARKS: James Cleland, Solvang, Sterling, 18K on one side of the sheath.
SIZE: From top of hilt to bottom of sheath about 3-1/2"; width at the topmost section is 7/8".
WEIGHT: 29.7 grams!
FINAL COMMENTS: Mr. Cleland's custom creations were NOT for the faint of heart when it came to the pocketbook. The pieces I offer (3 in total) came from the St. Louis area and I have tried to price them fairly. I could not find a sword pendant to comparatively price but the gold used in this piece seems to be more substantial than his other designs. Also, from what I understand from local St. Louis gossip, Mr. Cleland is now retiring from the jeweler's bench and in doing so, his prior creations can only appreciate in value. Here's a chance to collect a true ONE OF A KIND pierce of jewelry from a master goldsmith!
