Antique Victorian Paper Folding Fan - A Gift of Love | Images of Children and Pink/Red Roses
The John and Carolyn Grossman Collection at Winterthur contains 72 paper fans that can be viewed on any computer. Most people know that Mr Grossman's company produced paper images of his entire collection of more than 250,000 pieces he had collected for many years. When Mr Grossman passed, his entire collection of paper was gifted to Winterthur.
May I offer an antique (C.1890 to 1915) paper fan that Mr Grossman did not have in his collection. Called "A Gift of Love", the fan is a folding one and retains its original pink cord. The original pink ribbon is present at the back but has come apart due to age - to keep the fan in position as it was meant to be will require new ribbon to be placed at the back. The design of the fan is all chromolithographic - chromos that display a detailed and high color printing proess. Chromolithography was a process of printing that was developed in Europe during the early 1800s and arrived in America in 1840. As the 19th century progressed, chromolithographic illustrations could be found on such items as postcards, greeting cards, calendars, labels, trade cards, posters, books, children’s games, decorative prints, and numerous other items, including hand fans!
When closed the fan measures 6-1/2" x 2-3/4" approx. Condition is very nice with the first slat showing a bit more age patination that the inside slats. Written sentiments on the reverse. No creases, bends, paper missing that I can spot. Unknown publisher/maker - unknown artisan although Frances Brundage children and Catherine Klein graphics are a possibility. Even with the "old age look" and the ribbon needing replacing, this is a rare find!
For more information about hand fans, I suggest you visit the Winterthur website to view Mr. Grossman's collection.
