Vintage Made in Japan Japanese Ceramic Porcelain Bookends Book Ends - Nursery Boy & Girl | Civil War Antebellum Dressed
Dating anywhere from the 1930s to 1950s, may I offer this adorable pair of ceramic bookends. Depicting a little boy and girl dressed in Civil War antebellum fashion, the set looks as if it were made in England; it's only when you turn the set over and spot the black JAPAN mark do you realize that the set are copies of an original design from somewhere - it's a well known fact that the Japanese copied EVERYBODY when it came to ceramics! The set measures 4-1/2" high x 4-1/4" long approx. Width across the back is 3". Now the pair are pretty much perfect with no chips, cracks or crazing however one green felt bottom is missing as you can see. The one missing the felt has a paper plug and in my handling, I noticed that "sand" was leaking from the stopper. I had to empty the contents out - I'm sure the contents remain in the felted piece. So yes, this means one piece is lighter than the other but sand can always be found to add weight to the empty piece. Just too cute - perfect for the nursery!
