Antique Victorian Paper Mache Folding Shelf - Handpainted & Decoupage
Welcome to ROBINS NEST MIDWEST! May I offer….
AGE: C.1890 or so
ITEM: When the Japanese landed in England in the late 1800s, the English went MAD for anything "Japanese". It was during this time that Gilbert & Sullivan wrote THE MIKADO and it was also during this time that the Japanese influence in home decor entered the Victorian home. Here's one such item that would have found its way onto a painted wall. It's a paper mache, black lacquered folding shelf with handpainted pink Cherry Blossums and one decoupaged Bird. Completely folds down for travel.
CONDITION: Very nice for its age. Oh, there's a little wear near the holes where it would hook onto the wall. And there's a bit of wear near the latch and at the front edge, but there are no cracks, breaks, repairs AND all the original hardware is present. A bright shiny finish is still apparent all over the piece. Of course, if you want to fill in the worn areas with black paint - this would certainly NOT show from a distance when the item was placed on a wall.
METAL CONTENT: More than likely old brass hardware.
SIZE: When put together, 7-7/8" wide x 5-1/4" high.
FINAL COMMENTS: A fabulous antique piece!
