C.1950 Sterling Silver & Mother of Pearl Cufflinks - Asian Gentleman Fronts
Welcome to ROBINS NEST MIDWEST! May I offer….
AGE: C.1950 or so
ITEM: Set in the C.1900 box you see, may I present a pair of silver and mother of pearl cufflinks that were most likely made in the United States but featuring front panels that bear a cut-work design as well as black ink embellishments. The panels are asian in nature, possibly Chinese, and depict a single gent. The earrings are true left and right pieces as one gent is at the left while the other is at the right.
CONDITION: Very nice with no problems I can spot. Back mechanisms work as they should
METAL CONTENT: Sterling Silver
HALLMARKS: MICHAUD Sterling on the backs of the links - STERLING on the mechanisms.
SIZE: Fronts measure 11/16" x 5/8".
WEIGHT: 15.8 grams combined
FINAL COMMENTS: The MICHAUD hallmark indicated manufacture by Gladys and Arthur Michaud who founded their company in the 1930s and closed in the 1980s. Gladys would scout the Paris flea markets for rare and unique buttons/panels, etc. which were then converted into cufflinks. The finished creations were then sold to high-end stores in the United States (mostly east coast venues). Since the French term for cufflinks is "boutons de manchette", the English translation of “sleeve buttons” is definitely apropos!
