Alling & Co Art Nouveau 14K Gold, Enamel & Natural Pearl Bar Pin/Brooch
Welcome to ROBINS NEST MIDWEST! May I offer….
AGE: C.1910 or so
ITEM: A lengthy Art Nouveau pin from the workshop of Alling & Co, Newark, New Jersey! Fashioned of yellow gold and featuring translucent enamel and a myriad of natural pearls, the design is of a bunch of grapes with leafy tendrils. Old fashioned safety catch at the back to hold the pinstem in place.
CONDITION: Excellent with no problems I can spot.
METAL CONTENT: 14K Gold
HALLMARKS: 14 A on a clover - the mark of Alling & Co.
SIZE: Length is 2-5/8"; width is 9/16".
WEIGHT: A hefty 6.2 grams!
FINAL COMMENTS: This pin would more than likely have been presented by a bridegroom to his bride upon their wedding day. The symbolism of the pin was meant to suggest the bounty of the harvest (fruition), in other words of the Victorian vernacular - be fruitful and multiply!
RE ALLING & CO: George Krementz worked for Alling & Co as an apprentice. Before leaving the firm to open his own firm, he helped in the design and manufacture of jewelry for Alling. Alling was in business as early as 1838 but I can find no information as to when the company ceased to be in business. Their wares were always first rate and today, are extremely collectible!
