C.1900 FRENCH Gold Filled Watch Fob Ribbon with Joan of Arc Medal
Welcome to ROBINS NEST MIDWEST! May I offer….
AGE: C.1900 or so
ITEM: From France, a watch fob of black grosgrain ribbon featuring bright yellow gold filled findings. At the top of the ribbon is a bar depicting a winged Angel leading troops into battle; at the bottom of is a stunning medal of Joan of Arc - Saint Joan.
CONDITION: Very nice. The ribbon has the look of "old" - the top bar is bright and shiny - the bottom medal has a bit of a dark patina that may be able to be cleaned.
METAL CONTENT: French gold filled items (under the trade names of FIX, ORIA & MURAT) were commonly known as the French version of English pinchbeck. This is a metal combination that has the look/appearance of 18K gold but has a rose gold underlay. If the yellow gold wears, the rose gold appears giving the pin the most unusual color combination. However, the yellow gold layer was usually so thick that this usually never happened. Some dealers argue that metal is a gold filled material, while others will say it's a high gold overlay over a secret formula base. Whatever anyone decides, it is what it is - a piece of jewelry that has already lasted for many, many years with no dark spots!
HALLMARKS: None that I can spot.
SIZE: From top of swivel to bottom of ribbon measures approx 5-3/4". The top piece has a width of 1-1/16". The Joan diamond section alone measures 1-1/4" wide x 1-9/16".
WEIGHT: With the ribbon, 14.4 grams.
FINAL COMMENTS: Leave as is or take apart and use the findings in other projects.
