Vintage ITALIAN Gilt Metal & Micromosaic Religious Cross Pendant - Saint Therese Center (Removeable)

Welcome to ROBINS NEST MIDWEST!

Religious items are in a tricky place when it comes to listing. Most of the items I offer are jewelry so per Ruby Lane rules, they are supposed to be listed in jewelry. But I know that a lot of buyers look in the COLLECTIBLES RELIGIOUS category to find jewelry as well. So I am going to set down this rule for my listings and hope that once my customers get used to it, they will know where to look.

If an item is silver tone metal or silverplate/silver plate or gold filled- the item will be listed in COLLECTIBLES RELIGIOUS.

If an item is sterling silver or 14K Gold - the item will be listed in JEWELRY.

So may I now offer from my collection of religious treasures.....

AGE: C.1920 or so

ITEM: From Italy by way of France comes this Italian micro mosaic cross that could be placed on a wall or used as a pendant. It's not too large and it's not too small! The center section of the cross featured a picture of a Pope but no one really likes a Pope in their vintage pieces - well, at least I don't. So I took it out (easy to do - just lift the tabs) and inserted a portrait of Saint Therese aka Saint Thérèse of Lisieux. Don't like my pic? Insert your own!

CONDITION: Very nice with no glass tessarae (tiles) missing. Gilt metal has a patina of age about it.

METAL CONTENT: Gilt metal - gold over brass or base metal

HALLMARKS: None

SIZE: 3-5/8" high (not including bale or jump ring) x 2-7/16" wide

WEIGHT: A weighty 37.3 grams

FINAL COMMENTS: Not as ornate as the earlier micromosaic crosses from the era but pretty darn nice!

SAINT THERESE: Saint Thérèse of Lisieux born Marie Françoise-Thérèse Martin (2 January 1873 – 30 September 1897), also known as Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face was a French Catholic Discalced Carmelite nun who is widely venerated in modern times. She is popularly known as "The Little Flower of Jesus" or simply "The Little Flower". Together with Saint Francis of Assisi, she is one of the most popular saints in the history of the Catholic Church.

Thérèse felt an early call to religious life, and overcoming various obstacles, in 1888 at the early age of 15, she became a nun and joined two of her elder sisters in the cloistered Carmelite community of Lisieux, Normandy. After nine years as a Carmelite religious, having fulfilled various offices such as sacristan and assistant to the novice mistress, and having spent her last eighteen months in Carmel in a night of faith, she died at aged 24, following a slow and painful fight against tuberculosis.
