Rare Dtd 1903 William Comyns Sterling Silver Jewelry Box on Legs
Welcome to ROBINS NEST MIDWEST! May I offer….
AGE: English hallmarked for 1903.
ITEM: What better way to show true devotion and love than with a romantic piece of silver for m'lady's vanity!
Here's probably one of the rarest items one can find by William Comyns, one of the best known names in English silver! Anyone who collects antique silver has probably heard the story of how Comyns modeled his most famous design - 4 cherubic angels in clouds - upon the faces of his daughters. I can't tell you how many times that story was told to me in England whenever I found a piece of Comyns' angel design. Now, another English dealer has stepped forward with another tome.... That the design is an interpretation of Sir Joshua Reynolds "A Child's Portrait in Different Views: Angel Heads" painted in 1786-1787. Well, 2 stories, one design - who the heck cares! This is a lovely ANGELIC box, to be sure!
Now the saying goes, that anyone who knows ANYTHING about English silver knows just how popular this angel design is - by Comyns or any other maker! However, among Comyns silver pieces, the 4-legged, single drawer jewelry box is among the most scarce of items.
Starting with a wooden base, silver panels were applied top, bottom, sides and legs. The interior of the wood was lined in dark blue, almost purple velvet - pristine as the day it was first placed inside the wooden container. The top of the silver box bears 4 angels, seraphim, putti, cherubs, call them what you will, they are beautiful. The top also has scrollwork edging and the 4 legs are cabriolet style with some ornate detailing. A light black cardstock base covers the bottom of the box.
Small latch to the front that, when pulled, easily opens the inner drawer so that treasure can be placed on the inside.
CONDITION: Excellent! With that I mean no dents or dings, no breaks in the wood, no discoloration to the velvet. Lovely mellow vintage patina to the silver. The box has been stored for more than 50 years and has only recently come to light. This is the first time it has ever been on sale anywhere.

FINAL COMMENTS: Checking the Internet - another dealer on this site has the very same same box (without legs) offered at $2,600 plus. His has a very worn top - not practically perfect like mine. The last Auction Sale Price I could find for a "similar type box by Comyns" was Christies, South Kensington, London in about 2006. The box was the same design but not so tall - the sell price was $2,100 (and we all know that auction prices are basically wholesale prices). So as you can see, I am in the right range and can even dicker a bit on price.
