Rare C.1897 15K Gold, Enamel & Seed Pearl Queen Victorian Jubilee Pin/Brooch
Welcome to ROBINS NEST MIDWEST! May I offer….
AGE: C.1897 or so
ITEM: Something that is not found every day - and I'll tell you the reason why!
To celebrate the Jubilee of Queen Victoria, here's a yellow gold pin featuring a crown, two British flags (one representing the Country, the other representing the Monarchy) covered in enamel and the letters VR (Victoria Regina) set with natural seed pearls. With a c-catch at the back, this is one pin/brooch that only would have been purchased by the very wealthy in Victorian times.
Reading various books on the history of these pieces - not many pins of this historical even were produced in gold. The reason? Well, because a lot of people felt that putting a few guineas into a pin worn for only a short time, was far too costly! So if you do an Internet search for Queen Victoria Jubilee Pins you will see that many, many silver pieces survived but few of gold remain.
CONDITION: Very nice for its age. There are 2 lines in the British flag that need a touch more white enamel. The pin may have suffered a drop at some time but luckily the only affected area seems to be thin lines that really need to be viewed with a loupe to see the missing sections. If perfection IS desired, I'm sure my enamalist can work a miracle.
METAL CONTENT: 15K Gold
HALLMARKS: As is the norm with older piece of jewelry, none. Metal was acid tested for content.
SIZE: 1-9/16" x 1-1/8"
WEIGHT: A hefty 7 grams!
FINAL COMMENTS: In all the searching that I did on the Internet, I never did find this pin! It's a scarcity, no doubt about it!
