This beautiful antique brooch is either German or Austrian. Made of 935 silver (a slightly higher silver content than sterling, which is 925 parts per 1000), it is finished with vitreous glass (kiln-fired) enamel in a rich shade of cobalt blue. The elongated, octagonal brooch is accented with a wreath of beautifully hand-painted roses with white petals, yellow centers, and green leaves.
The piece measures 2 1/16" by 1 1/2". It has a pie-crust border. The back of the brooch has a light, gold vermeil wash, and a simple, fold-over c-clasp. It is signed "935 SM." There are a few light, age-appropriate surface abrasions, but no chips, cracks, flakes, or other damage to the enamel; the slightly convex surface of the high-gloss enamel made it difficult to capture clear images, but any spots in the pictures are light reflections, not damage. The color is much more vibrant in person.
