This 5 inch spoon has a gilt bowl with Joseph Somerset engraved on it. The top of the spoon shows two figures shaking hands, perhaps a tribute to Henry Clay's political skills of compromise. A small legend, "United we stand, divided we fall" is beneath the image, perhaps an acknowledgement of Clay's skill in postponing the Civil War. A thoroughbred horse's head is in the center of the handle, with "Kentucky", in raised relied, completing the stem design. The back of the spoon is patterned with leaves.
The spoon is marked Sterling with a maker's mark that is unknown to me: an M in a cartouche, with a bird to either side. 2 small dark marks in the lightly gilt bowl.
