Here is an excerpt from Bobbie Aug and Gerald Roy's book, Antique Quilts and Textiles: Tops provide an opportunity to examine the work from the back providing different kinds of information than just from the front. They also show the top and fabrics as they were when the top was created, unlike quilts which were subjected to wear, fading, and the abuse of everyday use. Over time, they have become increasingly desirable among collectors and historians. They are smaller and therefore, easier to store, but still represent the history and fabrics of the times. A top should be in unwashed condition as washing can affect quality. Seam allowances can be compromised when a top is washed.
