Antique Mennonite Roman Stripes Quilt, Wool. This cotton and wool quilt will surely make your room come to life. Originally acquired in Kalona, Iowa at an estate auction. Kalona is an Amish/Mennonite community near Iowa city. It was explained to me that this is what is called a Plain quilt, made for everyday use and very simply stitched. The colors are subtle, both chocolate and cocoa brown with mustard yellow, olive green and cranberry red. there are accents of a golden plaid wool to make it interesting and lovely. Quilt measures about 60" x 72". Pieced in the Roman Stripes pattern, there is a triangle followed by 2 stripes in contrasting material. The quilt is intact and in pretty good shape. There is some wool damage - 2 @1/2" holes in the body of the quilt and some scattered holes along the border that reveal an earlier, blue/black indigo resist quilt inside as the batting. Circa 1890 so a bit of wear is inevitable. The back is in good shape with a chocolate brown striped pattern. We think it would look great hanging on a wall in any home.
