Striking and unusual framed under glass antique punchwork or Berlinwork embroidered bible text from Psalm 37:5. Measuring 15-1/2" tall by 13-5/8" wide, German verse states "BEFIEHL DEM HERRN DEINE WEGE UND HOFFE AUF IHN, ER WIRD ES MOHL MACHEN", which I believe translates to "Commit your way to the Lord, trust in him and he will do this".
Done in tiny silvered beadwork, it is finely finished with ornate letters and scrollwork - center is accented with an overlaid cross and anchor design - bottom right bears the initials E.F. and date of 1879.
Condition is very nice with minor water staining on the bottom edge paper as shown - this is very faint - there are small areas of discoloration around the paper edge from age and how punchwork was attached within the frame - wood frame has minor rubbing and scuffing - back bears several old labels with crossed out family information - I can see the maker's name was Emma Fickley.
Punchwork was a popular type of embroidery during the last half of the 19th century - although many were sold as patterns to be completed at home, I believe this is an original composition, done in Germany. Just a wonderful antique framed and beaded religious motto - lovely addition to any home, collection or display!
Please note -- images taken with and without flash to bring out the detail - any white spots are a result of reflection from the glass.
