The inspiration for this design may have been the Victorians interest in British Raj India. Queen Victoria became the Empress of India in 1867. Around this time, Tiger claw jewelry became popular. The claws from Bengal Tigers in India were intricately decorated in gold and made into earrings, necklace and bracelets.
Although created later than the Tiger claw jewelry, this lovely heart has a magnificent Tiger hiding amongst cattails. The heart has a matte finish and there are no signs of wear to the gold fill.
Unmarked, measures 11/16" by 5/8". Two diminutive dimples on the reverse otherwise in excellent condition.
