Beautifully carved on this generous shell, is the representation of the L’Aurora (circa 1613-1614) ceiling fresco by the Italian artist Guido Reni. The original is in the Palazzo Pallavicini-Rospigliosi in Rome. If you have not seen this amazing work of art, may I recommend googling it as this work is a wonderful to behold.
This shell likeness shows the lovely Aurora, goddess of the dawn, bringing forth a new day as she leads the way for Apollo, god of light. Apollo is riding in a four horse chariot and dancing around him are the hours. These elegant women represent the passage of time. Between Aurora and Apollo is an adorable torch bearing putto.
The shell is displayed in a custom fitted sky blue velvet mat surrounded by a golden frame with a white wash. The frame treatment brings dimension to the beautiful design. A glass pane protects the cameo.
The frame does show some minor wear including the red undercoat that shows through in spots. I have included a photograph of an example. The cameo is in excellent condition. The frame measures 10-1/2" by 8-1/2", cameo measures approximately 4" by 3".
