John Griffiths was born in Wales in 1838. He spent most of his working career in Bombay, India. He was appointed Principal of the Sir Jamsetjee Jeejebhoy School of Art in 1865. He was lifelong friends with Lockwood Kipling (father of Rudyard Kipling) who worked with him at the J.J. School of Art.
