A beautiful sterling silver book chain collar and opening locket from the Victorian era. The hand chased foliate design on the chain is a very good match to the hand chased locket so it is possible these started out life together. One side of the locket has foliage, fern fronds, flowers and two roses or peonies. The back of the locket has initials in elegant script that are a work of art in themselves (BMB one B on its side). The chain measures approx. 17 1/2" x 5/8" and the locket approx. 2" x 1 1/2" excluding surmount. It has a total drop of 2 1/2" and weighs, a whopping 54g. It bears a full English hallmark for Birmingham 1880 and has a sponsors mark of JR&S (John Reading & Sons. Vyse Street, Birmingham). The surmount has a tiny lion passant stamp, the English sterling silver guarantee mark. The inside still has one retaining rim. The locket closes well and the oversized bolt ring fastener works as it should. This is in very good antique condition throughout but my photos just do not do it justice. I have not cleaned it which the new owner might wish to do. A fabulous addition to any collection.
