Piero Fornasetti - Set of 4 Porcelain Coasters - Vintage 1962 Mid Century Modern
Made in Italy - Exclusive for Saks Fifth Avenue
This wonderful set of 4 porcelain coasters were purchased at the Saks Fifth Avenue Flagship store on 5th Avenue during the early 1960's. They came from the barware collection used in an elegant Fifth Avenue apartment that also had Fornasetti's Le Oceanidi coasters.
These coasters were always hand washed, never in a dishwasher, the gold background is bright, they have some surface scratches but no chips, cracks or repairs. One coaster shown in the group of four photo - the lower left coaster shows a little wear to the gold background where some white porcelain appears near the arm of the figure on the left side.
Piero Fornasetti (1913-1988) was from Milan Italy - an artist and a graphic artist, a set decorator for the stage. He was prolific and especially known for designing furniture, wallpaper, everyday objects, porcelains. His designs were inspired by classical and neo-classical art, architecture and architectural engravings. The design of the coasters reflects this interest with two figures holding the reins of the horses and chariot.
You don't need to see his famous mark - a single hand holding a paint brush - Fornasetti-Milan, Made in Italy to recognize an item designed by Fornasetti - his designs were mostly executed in black and white, besides the gold on the background of the coasters, seldom do you see the use of color.
The 1950's and 60's were the height of his popularity when these coasters were purchased. Since 1988 his son Barnaba manages the business, Fornasetti archives and maintains a store in Italy where the designs of his Father Piero are timeless and continue to be in demand.
