Schreiner New York - Vintage 3/4" High Dome Pin. Designer Signed in two places.
For almost forty years Schreiner was established in New York City - from 1939 until 1977. Their jewelry was not produced in the same large quantity as Trifari and Coro but what outstanding pieces of costume jewelry they created. Most famous is the Ruffle Pin with unusual Keystone glass cut stones and sometimes incorporating inverted rhinestones with the pointy end set up. In addition to these stones they are also famous for dog tooth prongs, pie crust metal setting and especially joining top and bottom settings together with rings as shown in this layered pin. Needless to say their jewelry was very labor intensive to manufacture. Last year I sold a Schreiner high dome Ruffle pin with amethyst color keystones and faux turquoise cabochon center. I always found the combination of colored stones unique by mixing colors that seem surprising at first.
Like many Schreiner pins, this has a dark bronze color metal setting and the two layer construction, the Schreiner New York cartouche is on both the top and bottom sections to be sure there is no mistake it is a signed Schreiner pin. What makes this particular pin dramatic is the asymmetrical profile creating a high dome at the bottom of the pin. Along the top ten pale lavender faceted ovals are prong set with closed back in a graduated design. The very top being the smallest and increasing in size towards the bottom. Three larger faceted foil backed oval rhinestones in a lavender-pinkish hue, prong set have open back settings at the bottom, one of these rhinestones set in the center does not sparkle as brightly at the stones on each side but since it is located in the center at the bottom and is partially covered by the overlapping row of green stones set above it, it is hardly noticeable when worn. All stones are original to the pin and I would never replace it, but want to mention it. Seven round faceted rhinestones in two sizes in a deep rich purple the color of amethyst are set along the bottom in a closed back setting. At the base of the top layer is a single row of twenty two round prong set rhinestones the color of peridot, not emerald but more olivine, also graduated in size with the smallest stones at the top increasing in size at the bottom. All prong set. At the very top is one elongated cabochon the color periwinkle - a purplish blue and NOT as blue as the photographs listed show. The center cabochon measures 1-1/4" long x 5/8" across. This pin weighs a hefty 27 grams.
For collectors of Schreiner jewelry, the design and construction are what make it a stunning vintage Schreiner pin to enjoy wearing.
