Trifari's Pair of Robin Lovebirds Brunialti Book Piece Pin Clip designed by Alfred Philippe.
To find Trifari's enamel Lovebirds in very fine condition considering it dates to 1940 is amazing. Figural vintage costume pins have always been a favorite collectible, especially birds. The bright enamel colors of the birds red belly, dark blue heads, tail feathers and green leaves are all in good condition, also the rhodium plated metal back is highly polished. The pair of Robins and green leaves are sculptural and 3-dimensional.
It's hard to believe this pin clip is almost 75 years old, but it has always been well cared for as all other pieces in my collection and very seldom worn. The clear pave rhinestones on the wings and the scattered rhinestones on the branch appear to be original and have a nice sparkle. Each bird has a ruby red cabochon rhinestone eye.
The back of the clip is marked Trifari with crown along the top. On the back of the leaves along the bottom Des. Pat. No. 119102. The patent was granted on February 20, 1940. The pin measures 2" x 2" top to bottom and across both tail feathers. The double prong clips measure 1" in length.
The pin is featured on page 82 of the Brunialti's N-Z Volume - American Costume Jewelry - Art & Industry, 1935-1950. An outstanding two volume set and I have several additional figural pins to list that are also featured in these volumes. Kovels' Part Two - Buyers Guide to Costume Jewelry pictures the colorful Trifari pin on the front cover.
