This shiny sterling necklace is a 14 inch long, 3 mm wide, flat, snake chain. The clasp on this vintage chain broke, so I soldered, 2 decorated, cut out end tubes to the ends, and 4 inches of chain, making it adjustable, up to 24 inches. I put a large, metal, silver, heart clasp on one end and a crazy lace agate bead dangling at the other end of the chain on the other side. This set is made of natural Nautilus Fossils. The "Ammonite" pendant measures 1 1/4 inch long. I added an 8 mm pietersite bead below the textured, cut out bail making the length 3 inches. Next to the bail, I added 2 silver beads and 2 brown and clear rhinestone, "lampwork style" beads. The bracelet is a bit over 8 inches and is also 3 mm wide. I attached an abalone silver framed fish on the end of the lobster claw clasp. The dangling pendant is a smaller matching Ammonite fossil. It is almost 1 inch long with 2 small beads at the top. The sterling bail has cut out hearts all around it. is bezel set in a frame of sterling silver. 10 mm, brown and white striped Botswana agates at the bottom. They have "fish hook" style, pierced ear wires. These fossils are over 4 million years old. Ammonites are the fossilized, hard shells of extinct mollusks. Their closest relative is the chambered Nautilus from the Pacific and Indian oceans. Ammonites were named after the Egyptian god, Ammon who was said to possess the head of a ram which is similar in shape to these ancient mollusks. Ammonites appeared 400 million years ago and became extinct with the dinosaurs approximately 65 million years ago. Much like the nautilus shell, you can clearly see the chambers on these ammonite slices. Many civilizations have history using the ammonite. The Navajo carried ammonite as a fetish for good hunting and good fishing. Ancient used ammonite for medicinal purposes. Because the shape resembled coiled snakes, the English and Scots thought they could cure snake bites.
