This dazzling ring features an amazing Black Opal with flashes of reds blues and greens throughout the stone. It is an Oval cut Cabochon stone, weighing a minimum of 2.5 carats, and while it is a dark stone, it is fully transparent through which light can be seen from the back side of the stone when held up to the light. The stone itself is mounted in a 22lt carat Bezel setting which I alloyed from 24kt gold in order to control the color and content of the gold. The pictures do not come close to doing justice to this ring or this stone.
This ring presented an interesting challenge in that I wanted a ring with a stone mounting that sat up high than the surface of the finger. I have used this design before in that the ring shank is narrowed at the top of the curve but left open while still defining the ring size and supporting the stone.
It is made from Sterling Silver and Fine silver utilizing the ancient Filigree technique with hand forged and milled Filigree components. The process is time consuming but the result is well worth the effort.
The ring measures 8.25 and makes a great first finger ring. After making the ring it became apparent that the ring when turned on its side, is easier to slip on and then rotate up to the correct position which lends itself to those who might have issues with arthritis where the knuckle is a little larger that the overall ring size.
This is not an everyday wear ring but rather a special occasion accessory. It will catch your eye and distract you from whatever you are doing. What a great gift this coming holiday season.
The ring stands up from the finger nearly 1/2 and inch and as such would not be a good ring to wear for everyday wear as it will get bumped and marred by everyday activities. It is a great gift for the spring and summer but is a statement piece for any time of year.
