This amazing ring catches my eye whenever I see it on the hand because of the unusual quality of the stone and its lavender orchid color 14kt total weight stone. This is a tourmaline cut by master cutter Robert Johnson San Marco, CA. I was lucky enough to meet Robert Johnson in person and purchase this stone from him recently at a gem show.
The clarity of a tourmaline of this size is truly unusual and typically stones of this size are cloudy and included. It is a deep rectangular cut and the facets act like the facets of a Fresnel lens of a light house when you rotate it in the light. The stone itself actually magnifies what is behind it and as such I added a Filigree 'S' shape behind it which is visible when held up in the light and in one of the pictures.
The ring size measures 9.5. The design is a larger design for a ring which I typically don't execute, but I felt the stone warranted a more elaborate treatment.
The technique used in the design of this ring is called Russian Filigree where very fine ribbons of Fine Silver or other metals are twisted and flattened and curled to fill the blank spaces in the framing wire design.
The Stone, is a lavender Tourmaline measuring 18.5 x 9.25mm a total of 14 carats total weight. The stone is set in a 14kt gold bezel decorated with Sterling silver embellishments around the base of the bezel.
The pictures do not do due justice to the color of this stone although I have tried to give a sense of its size in the picture on the finger. The stone itself carries so much light it will catch your attention too, when you wear it. The cut is beautiful and it was my first choice out of all the stones that I saw the day I purchased it.
The ring surface on the finger measures 1.25 x 8/10 inch covering the first knuckle of the finger. It can be worn on the first finger, middle finger or even on the thumb and will look spectacular wherever it is worn.
I am honored to be able to incorporate this Robert Johnson stone into one of my pieces. I can't think of a better holiday gift for the coming Gift giving season.
