A fine French hand painted portrait miniature in a wood frame, circa 1900. Signed J. Bind. The portrait is of Virginia Oldoini, The Countess of Castiglione, after the original painting by Michele Gordigiani. See below for a brief biography. The miniature is 4 3/8" across by 5" high including the frame. With the original old French printed paper backing intact. We do not know what the portrait is painted on since the back is sealed and intact. Note: the frame has some blemishes, please see all photos. Guaranteed to be as described.
Virginia Oldoïni, Countess of Castiglione (22 March 1837 – 28 November 1899), better known as La Castiglione, was born to an aristocratic family from La Spezia. She was a 19th-century Italian aristocrat who achieved notoriety as a mistress of Emperor Napoleon III of France. She was also a significant figure in the early history of photography.
