A rare English Late Jacobean - Carolean period oak coffer, dating from the second half of the 17th century. With paneled construction and a shallow carved front, both typical of the period. It has a very old finish, what's left of it, with a dark brown patina. It is actually much darker that it appears in the pictures, which were taken with a flash to show detail. It is a nice small size measuring 21" high by 38 1/2" wide by 19" deep. Perfect for the foot of a bed. In fair-good condition considering it's great age. There was some dry rot on the feet which is now in stable condition, though there are losses. We added a small shim to one of the back feet to make it level. One of the stiles has been rebuilt. The original cotter pin hinges are missing and have been replaced with newer, heavier duty hinges. The piece of molding on the lid is from a different piece of furniture and is not in the center. Maybe it was added to cover some damage? The candle box does not have a lid and there is no key though the lock box is there. All these repairs and modifications are part of it's history. We are selling this in "as found" condition, with the exception of adding the shim to the back foot to level it up, cleaning, waxing, and stabilizing the dry rot. Guaranteed to be as described.
