An American paper mache snuff box purportedly once owned by Captain William Pope. Given to him by William Wirt, the 9th United States Attorney General. The box has a silver plaque on top with an engraving "gift from W'm Wirt". On the inside of the lid is scratched Wm Pope Powhaten VA. See below for more information on William Wirt. The box itself is shell shaped and measures 4" wide by 2" deep by 1 1/2" high. It is in good condition with wear and tear commiserate with age. There is an old hand written note on the inside of the box. Please see all photos.
William Wirt (November 8, 1772 – February 18, 1834) was an American author and statesman who is credited with turning the position of United States Attorney General into one of influence.
