Boston cabinet maker, James Vose, founded Vose Piano Company in the mid 19th century and soon earned a reputation for producing well-made merchandise that competed with the most respected companies in New York and Chicago. Vose involved his sons in the business, eventually changing the name to Vose & Sons Piano Company. Son Willard A. Vose succeeded in improving the company’s good reputation even further than his father. Many today speak of Vose pianos as “work horses” implying that the pianos were well made and hold up to heavy use.
