A beautiful and quite mysterious nephrite jade, Chinese, vintage necklace. Composed of a large, double-sided, celadon-green central pendant; covered with images of a delicate, baby- deer with stars on its sides, flowers and clouds surrounding it. In China the deer is the symbol of good fortune and longevity - amongst other things. The pendant is large at 2 inches long, 1.25 inches wide and 0.5 inches in depth. It is heavy and carved with the same pattern on both sides - with only the subtlest of variations indicative of good hand-carving. The pendant is mounted on a sterling silver wire, with a small nephrite bead to finish it. Above, the sterling-silver paper-clip chain has dark-green and light-green nephrite jade beads - all simply polished and turned. The chain ends with a simple spring-ring clasp and two small nephrite beads, that allow it to be adjusted from 18 to 20 inches. The necklace is substantial and the clasp is a little sticky - but works fine. It is unmarked - but clearly vintage and the chain tests for sterling silver. The dark-green beads are dyed - but otherwise the nephrite appears all-natural, with expected variations in colour and clarity. Absolutely stunning on - this is quite the conversation-starter!
Length:- an adjustable 18 - 20 inches with the pendant hanging a further 4 inches from that.
