Although the pattern is simple, the overall effect is anything but simple! This lovely butter tub is cut in a cane pattern that carries onto the two upright handles and the base. The lid has two rows of cane pattern around the outside rim, then short flutes leading up to the faceted finial. The blank is clear. The cuts are precise; this is a high quality piece of cut glass. It is not signed and we have not been able to identify the maker at this time.
This comes from the estate of Phil’s mom, who was a passionate collector of American Brilliant cut glass and other fine art glass.
SIZE: Height from base to top of finial is about 4 1/8”. The tub without lid measures about 2 1/4” tall, while height to the top of the handle is 3 1/8”. Diameter at the base is about 3 3/4”, while diameter at from rim edge to rim edge at the top is 5 1/8”.
CONDITION: Overall this piece is in very good condition, with just a few age-related issues. There are fine scratches on the base hobnails, most likely due to being moved around. There is one small flake chip on the edge of the base, and a few tiny nicks on high points on the sides (two on the edges of hobnails). Two very small flake chips can be seen at the top of one of the handles.
This is a lovely piece that will display very well.
