Here is a scarce toy from our toy collection made by TPS. It has the same car as used in the TPS Police Car Chase platform toy. Rather paraphrasing William Gallagher in his book on TPS toys, we thought we would quote him about this toy.
“Police car on over and under figure eight platform base with city and country scenes with separate key.”
“Action: Windup car goes around platform hooked on rail. Track elevates and crosses over itself via open bridge, in figure eight fashion.”
That sums it up.
This toy was introduced around 1965 and had a production run of only 12,000. It is scarce with a listing of 4 out of 5, 5 being the most difficult to find.
Size: The platform is 15 ¼ inches long, 6 ¾ inches wide and 2 inches high. The police car is 2 ¼ inches long, about 1 1/8 inches long, and about 1 1/8 high.
Condition: This toy did get some play. There are a couple of wear spots on the road. There is a small scrape about a quarter in long just above the TPS logo. It looks like it was caused by the rail on the car. There are also some points of raised tin on the platform as if something poked the cardboard backing with a sharp object. These can be seen when light is shined on the platform at certain angles. They seem to be at spots where the rails were attached to platform, so these may be a result of manufacturing.
The car needs a push occasionally, even though the windup is strong. Most likely this is caused by the rubber drying out on the wheels. The wheels may be softened up which would provide better traction if one wished to do so.
The box is in very good condition with only one tear at one seam. There are bends to the box which could be fixed if one wants to.
All in all, this is a nice toy. I decorated my office with these platform toys by hanging them on the walls. It made for a colorful environment. How do you display your toys?
