This novelty ceramic inkwell was made in Britain around 1900. It is in the shape of a curling stone, transfer printed to look like granite. A band around the middle has a rough texture that looks like unpolished rock. The lid is silver colored metal. This is a heavy inkwell, adding to the illusion of granite. It was not made to be used with a removable insert; there are some ink stains in the well. This inkwell is unmarked.
SIZE: Diameter is about 3 1/2 inches at its widest point. Height is just over 2 1/2 inches. Weight is about 13 ounces.
CONDITION: There are no chips or cracks in the ceramic. The transfer print is also in very good condition. There are a few small white sections; these appear to be where the transfer missed as the glaze is still glossy. There is glaze crazing which can be seen under magnification. The metal collar has some dents or dimples. Otherwise the lid and hinge are in good condition.
