This traveling set, most likely used by a gentleman, was made around the turn of the last century. It features three pieces: an inkwell, a match holder with striker, and a notebook. All three are covered in a leather-like material, likely faux leather, in an aubergine or deep plum color. All three are monogrammed in gold with the letters B.W.
The inkwell and match holder are opened by pressing a button in the front. When opened, the inkwell reveals a glass ink bottle. The lid has a rubber section that fits over the bottle; there is a spring behind the rubber so it fits tightly over the ink bottle to keep ink from spilling while traveling. The match holder opens to reveal a match striker; this is on a hinge and can be lifted to access the match area.
The notebook is lined in purple cloth. There is a blank notebook inside. Pockets on each side open up to allow for thicker papers or possibly books to be kept inside. One pocket has a place for cards and pens.
SIZE: The inkwell and match holder measure just under 1 3/4 inch by just over 3/4 inch and are 1 3/4 inch high. The notebook measures about 10 inches by 6 1/2 inches wide, and about 1/2 inch thick.
CONDITION: The inkwell and match holder are in very good condition, with little wear on the covering. The mechanism works well on each. They were both painted green on the inside; some of this has flaked off to show the bare metal. The inkbottle is in excellent condition with no chips. The match striker’s hinge is strong. The notebook has some wear, including a few surface tears in the covering. The color on the front is a little less bright than the back and the other two pieces; it may have been in the light and become somewhat faded. Overall, all three pieces are in very good condition and make a nice display together.
