This is a fun double inkwell. We believe it is Majolica, although we have not been able to identify the maker. It has a great swirl pattern which is accentuated by darker green glaze against the mint green overall glaze. The collars have a hammered look; we are not sure if that was done originally or whether it has rippled over time. The hinges have a stop on them so the lids don’t open too far and tip things over. We don’t believe the inserts are original; they feel a bit loose and are white porcelain which doesn’t quite match the pottery inkwell. One is chipped around the edge. There is an impressed mark inside each of the lids which we have not been able to identify.
SIZE: This inkwell is about 4 3/4 inches long, 2 7/8 inches wide and 2 3/8 inches high.
CONDITION: There is glaze crazing over the entire inkwell. As noted, one of the inserts is chipped around the rim. One of the hinges is a bit wobbly and wants to close a little to the side. Overall, it’s a really nice little inkwell.
