This fun inkwell was made by the brothers Oscar & Edgar Gutherz between 1898 and 1918 in the city of Altrohlau (now part of the Czech Republic). This inkwell includes not only the mark for this porcelain factory, but also the initials CND – possibly those of the artist and/or painter. The Arts and Crafts style decoration on the inkwell is hand painted. Quite a bit of gold is used in the decoration. The inside and rim of the integral insert is also painted in gold. The lid lifts off. The design and colors make me think of fall.
This inkwell comes from my personal inkwell collection, which I am in the process of downsizing. Look for many more fine inkwells to be added to our shop.
SIZE: Diameter is 3 1/2”. Height is about 2 3/4”.
CONDITION: Condition of this inkwell is excellent. There are no chips or cracks. The decoration is vibrant. The gold has a nice soft patina and is 100% intact – except for the rim and inside of the insert, which has quite a bit of gold rubbed off.
I’ve never seen another inkwell by this company – here is your chance to own something that may just be the only one!
