Here we have one of the most difficult Nippon inkwell patterns to find: the Motoring Scene. This square, matte glazed inkwell features on one panel an old fashioned motorist tootling along on a country road, the purple hills in the background. The back panel shows that country road without the car... presumably it has chugged its way down around a corner. The side panels feature a stylized design, possibly a basket with three apples on top – or a bouquet of three flowers. The lid shows the same stylized design. The background is a soft gray, and the trim is done in black and brown. Altogether, it's a more masculine design than many found on Nippon inkwells, and one that is sure to please!
The condition of this inkwell is very good to excellent. It has been used, and there are a few small ink spots on one corner and slight smudging on the background, mainly on the corners. The design panels are in excellent condition, with no spotting or glaze loss and the colors are fresh and vibrant. It includes what we believe is the original insert. The insert rim is painted green, which matches the green colors in the design panels. There are no chips, cracks or repairs on any parts of this inkwell. There is a little rubbing of the glaze on the corners, and a fine scratch in the background glaze of the lid (about ¼" long)
This is such a fun inkwell – a great piece for Nippon collectors, inkwell collectors and collectors of old motorist memorabilia alike. Snap it up while you can; you won't see another one soon!
