From the “World’s Largest Manufacturer of Toys” (it says so on the box) comes this Mechanical Delivery Motorcycle, aka Speed Boy Delivery Motorcycle. When we first saw this toy, we were “wowed” by its condition. Just beautiful lithography.
According to Greenberg’s Guide to Marx Toys, this wasn’t the first version of this toy: it’s the FIFTH version! There were even two additional prototypes! Even so this version “probably dates from the ‘30s or ‘40s” (Greenberg).
We don’t know why there were so many versions, but we can make a couple of guesses. First, this toy was less labor intensive and less costly to make than the earlier versions; and second, when we read the box, Marx says it best :“This is one of the many Marx toys…Have you all of them?” You can bet there is someone out there that has all of the versions.
Size: 10 inches long; 5 inches wide at the windup key; about 5 ½ inches at the driver’s cap.
Condition: WOW! No wear on the wheels, a telltale sign of use. There are some scratches here and there but not from play. It looks like it was made yesterday—maybe this morning! Not 70 to 90 years ago.
The box is in very good condition too. There is some warping, creases, and an oil spot on one flap, with a little separation on a seam. Some small puncture spots too, where it looks like something was placed on the box since the punctures are from the inside out.
Overall, this may be the best example of this toy and box on the planet. Now THAT’S really delivering the goods!
