Figural inkwells are so much fun, and this one is no exception. It features a wonderful wise owl standing on a rock or piece of ground. That is hinged in the back, so the owl swings back to reveal the inkwell. The owl’s head sits on the table so the inkstand is kept steady. The flat surface around the inkwell is cast with a beautiful decoration of oak leaves, branches and acorns, a few of which have been painted gold. There is a ceramic or pottery insert in the inkwell. We are not sure if this is original, although it fits nicely. There is a pen rest in front. “GERMANY” is embossed twice on the base. Otherwise there are no marks. We believe this dates to the early 1900s.
SIZE: The inkstand stands at 5 3/4 inches to the top of the owl’s head. It is 4 3/4 inches wide and about 3 3/8 deep.
CONDITION: The condition is very good. There is a small spot of paint loss on the breast of the owl, and another spot on the front of the pen rest that has some corrosion, most likely due to ink. The hinge is strong and works well.
