This beautiful cloisonné box was made in Japan in the early part of the 1900s. It features a royal blue background. Branches end in a profusion of flowers, possibly peonies, in pink, red, yellow and blue. A bird flies towards one of the flower buds. A few springs of grass are placed underneath. The sides are decorated with swirling cloisonné patterns and white flowers. The base is white with another swirling pattern. The inside is etched brassy metal which may have been silver plated (or painted) at one time. The lid is hinged. We cannot find any marks.
SIZE: The box measures 4 1/2 by 3 3/8 inches and is 1 5/8 inches high.
CONDITION: The enamel is in very good condition. There are numerous tiny pits on the top which appear as tiny dots unless viewed with magnification, with a few slightly larger pits here and there. This is typical of older cloisonné. There is one very tiny chip of metal on one edge of the top (less than 1mm). The colors are rich and vibrant. This is a truly beautiful box.
