Talk about iconic! Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Pinocchio, Figaro, Goofy, Pluto, Huey, Dewey, and Louie: all on one Chein bank. Made about 1954 and probably up until the 1960s, this bank came with a green, blue, or red base. The trap could be just about any color—whatever was surplus at the plant. By the 1950s, Chein had moved away from a keyed locking mechanism to a trap that could be opened with about any kind of a straight edge.
The colors on this bank are outstanding. We suspect this bank was made in the ‘60s- just a feeling about the paint and its somewhat lighter lithographic pigmentation.
Notice that this was copyrighted by Walt Disney Productions. Chein, and Marx too, had agreements with all of the character based companies for toy production.
Size: The base is 6 ½ inches long and 3 inches wide; the bank is 3 ½ inches tall at the roof’s peak.
Condition: There are scrapes and scratches and edge-wear. The most noticeable scratch is near the Nephew pushing the wheelbarrow. Around the coin trap too. Donald's tongue has some edgewear. There is a dent near Minnie’s left ear, which can be seen when the light is just right. The coin trap is a replacement.
Even with its issues, this is one of the nicest WDP banks available today. A better one might be found, but it may take several years.
