This is a beautiful and fun little traveling inkwell shaped like a violin case. Covered in leather, or possibly sharkskin died black, this is a great piece from a by-gone age.
A button on the front pushes to open the violin case lid. The ink bottle has a spring loaded lid which works perfectly. A pen wipe is also included. This inkwell has been used; the bottle is heavily ink stained (in fact, there is still dried ink in the bottom ) and the pen wipe has ink stains as well.
SIZE: This inkwell measures 3 1/4" long, by 1 3/8" wide at its widest and 1 1/4" high (not counting the handle).
CONDITION: Condition overall is very good to excellent. The leather is completely intact with no tears or chips. The opening and latching mechanisms work very well – both lids shut nice and tight and spring open easily. As stated, both bottle and pen wipe are ink stained. The leather padding inside the lid is a little cracked due to ink, but still performs its function of sealing the bottle when closed.
It's easy to imagine the gentleman or lady taking this on a Grande Tour and using it to write letters home. It is also easy to imagine it in your own collection!!
