The Balky Mule is one of the most produced windup toys for all manufacturers. Gerard, Lehmann, Strauss and others all had their versions. Even Marx had at least three different styles. According to Greenberg's Guide to Marx Toys, this one began manufacturing in 1948 and sold for a mere 94 cents. It was gone from catalogs by 1953.
Wind him up. Watch go forward and backward. The donkey leaves the ground and the driver flies out of his seat while spinning around. Enough to upset anyone's breakfast!
Size: 8 inches long; 5 inches high; 2 ½ inches wide
Condition: The lithography is bright and colorful. There are some scrapes on the mule's side probably from the string rubbing during all of the action. The wheels have wear from rolling around on the floor. And there is wear on the edges of the cart from handling.
The toy works exceptionally well with a very strong windup motor.
The toy displays well and is fun to watch. But we don't know why anyone would want to hitch a mule to a cart after watching this toy in action!
