The fish rises up to grab your pen. Wow – look at him jump! The good thing is that he'll let go just as easily. This fun novelty pen holder is cast in the shape of a fish rising out of the water. The details are great; there are even bubbles around the tail. Although it looks like bronze, we believe this is spelter with a bronze finish. It is quite heavy. A similar pen holder can be seen in Veldon Badders' "Collector's Guide to Inkwells" on page 148. That one has a pewter finish. According to Badders, this pen holder dates to the early 20th century. An early plastic cone is fitted into the fish's mouth to hold the pen and protect the metal from ink.
SIZE: The diameter of the base is 4 1/8". Height is about 4".
CONDITION: There are a few very small nicks on the top edge of the base. Otherwise the metal is in fine shape. There was gold on the fish; we aren't sure whether the entire fish was painted gold or if it was just used as highlights. If the entire fish was gold, then much of it has worn off. Overall, this guy is in great condition.
This would make a fun conversation piece on your desk, and will hold any type of pen or pencil.
